The pandemic was the testing time for everyone. India is a country of different classes. World Population Clock in 2021 reported 86,799,498 people are living in the poverty. While seeing the world crumbling down due to lack of food, Malhar Foundation started the Annapurna Project where the food grains were getting distributed to the needy in the slum areas. We also started communicating with the communities. One desperate day, a 75-year-old grandmother brought more sense to us when questioned that how long you are going to distribute the food. Malhar Foundation also introspected and asked her what she needs to change her condition. The old lady shared about how job opportunity is one sustainable process for a dignified life. And we realized 138 women of that community worked as the maids in nearby areas and now, are jobless due to the pandemic. To have an in-depth understanding, we surveyed 2000 families in the Nagpur slum and identified 150 women who were wanting to work. That one conversation with the grandmother changed our perspective from being the provider to supporters and how important it is to have a dignified life irrespective of class.
